Piece by Piece is a bright, clever song-filled biopic that pretends it’s a behind-the-scenes documentary using small plastic bricks, angles and curves to celebrate an artist known for his quirky soul. It is deep and surreal and often adorable. Is it high concept or low? Like Williams, it’s a bit of both.

This film’s topic, singer-songwriter-producer Pharrell Williams, seems somewhat inappropriate at first glance. Many of the songs he recorded, wrote, or produced do not lend themselves to a PG-rated movie treatment.

The superproducer and "Happy" hitmaker, responsible for changing the sound of hip-hop, tells his life story via Legos and Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville.

Piece By Piece has a lot of fun with the creative liberties of the visual embellishment that takes Pharrell’s minifig deep under the sea and to the vastness of space, or turns Snoop Dogg to a LEGO dog. Even still, this collaboration between LEGO and Pharrell never completely ties together in a fully cohesive or deeply emotional way.

If it weren’t filmed entirely using animated Lego blocks, “Piece by Piece” would be a fairly routine music documentary, in this case a profile of the protean hip-hop producer-performer Pharrell Williams.

For Lego, making 'Piece by Piece' was its biggest gamble since stepping into feature films with 2014's 'The Lego Movie.'
