California Highway Patrol officers and K9s seized roughly $1.7 million worth of fentanyl during two traffic stops along the 5 Freeway last week, including a large shipment of the drug that had been concealed inside packages of carne asada, authorities said.

During a traffic stop in Fresno County on Oct. 3, a drug-sniffing dog alerted his handler to narcotics inside of a cooler. Authorities found 11 pounds of fentanyl inside raw beef.

The California Highway Patrol seized nearly $1.7 million worth of fentanyl in two separate traffic stops on Interstate 5, including drugs hidden in packages of raw beef, Governor Gavin Newsom's office said.
