Marriott International has agreed to pay $52 million and make changes to bolster its data security to resolve state and federal claims related to major data breaches that affected more than 300

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday it will require Marriott International and its subsidiary Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide to put in place an information security program to settle charges over multiple data breaches from 2014 to 2020.

"Marriott's poor security practices led to multiple breaches affecting hundreds of millions of customers," said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The Hawai‘i Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs has announced that a group of 50 state attorneys general has reached a settlement with Marriott International, Inc.

Marriott International Inc. reached a $52 million agreement with 49 state attorneys general and the District of Columbia to settle complaints arising from a series of data breaches spanning four years and impacting over 344 million customers worldwide.

Connecticut will receive about $2 million from a $52 million national settlement with Marriott International over a 2010s data breach.

The hotel operator agreed to pay a penalty and implement enhanced data-security practices as part of separate settlements with the FTC and U.S. states related to data breaches that affected hundreds of millions of customers.
