The Messerschmitt Me 163 “Komet” was the world’s first and only operational rocket-powered interceptor, introduced in 1944 to counter Allied bomber formations. With a top speed close to 960 km/h and an extraordinary climb rate, it could reach altitude in just a few minutes, though its rocket motor provided only 7–8 minutes of powered flight. Armed with two 30 mm MK 108 cannon, the Komet destroyed a small number of enemy aircraft but caused heavy losses among its own pilots due to volatile fuels
