I hear this a lot from women denied HRT or a woman assuming she can’t have HRT due to not being able to have the combined contraceptive pill previously due to migraine history. Taking the combined pill is contraindicated for women who have migraine with aura (flashing lights etc) or have migraine without aura and not recommended if aged over 35 due to the increased stroke risk that this creates. The basic answer is there is no fixed time limit. The BMS (British Menopause Society) guidance states that arbitrary limits should not be placed on the duration of HRT use for anyone. If symptoms persist and you’re benefiting, it’s reasonable to continue as long as risks remain low (eg no new contraindications develop and as you get older you may be moved onto transdermal eg patches or gel if not already) and you’re reviewed regularly.
