Today marks the birthday of Alois Alzheimer, the first person to identify the disease we know now as Alzheimer's, the leading cause of dementia. Back in 1906 he found proteins in the brains of people who lived with the disease and paved the way for many discoveries we have made today. These proteins, amyloid and tau, have since been investigated by many scientists across the world, and new treatments are being developed in labs and tested in trials to try and stop the damage they cause.
